Why has your business stopped growing?
By Andrew Isaacs, CIMA Member in Practice ·
A business often stops growing because the instinct that built it has stopped fitting. Breaking through means testing the old habits with real numbers, not working harder. AI Finance Partners puts numbers under the decisions that used to run on gut, so the next stage of the business is chosen rather than drifted into.
Why does the thing that grew the business start to cap it?
When a business stops growing, the culprit is often the very instinct that grew it. Your gut got you here, and for years your gut was right. It made the pricing calls, the hiring calls, the where to push calls, and mostly it made them well. Then, past a certain size, it quietly stops fitting, and the same instincts that built the place start to hold it still.
It rarely feels like a mistake, which is exactly why it is so hard to spot. The prices that worked at one size can cap you at the next. The hires get made the way they have always been made. Next year's plan becomes last year with a bit added. A ceiling looks like a business working harder for the same result: sales up, profit flat, everyone busy, new people costing more than they seem to add.
Instinct works to a point, then the same instincts start to hold you back.
How do you break through?
Getting past it is not about working even harder. It is about checking the old habits instead of just inheriting them. Building next year's plan from scratch instead of last year plus a bit. Testing your prices against the value you actually give rather than what you charged before. Putting a real number against the calls you make on gut, and seeing whether the number agrees. Numbers do not replace judgement. They give it something solid to stand on.
And it has to be done with your team, not to them, because a plan that lives only in your head stalls the minute you get busy. That is what accountants who help you grow actually means, and it is the work AI Finance Partners does once the basics are running. You can see how we work with small businesses here.
